How brown does Purigen accept to be to alter it?

I recently changed my tanks from charcoal to Purigen. The good news is that afterwards i month, my nitrates are closer to 0 than the xxx they were e'er hovering at between water changes.

My question is when do I change the Purigen. I don't want to recharge it ( I would rather just buy it again then bleach it, use Prime etc). I've searched and searched merely all I read is "when it's chocolate-brown" which is sort of subjective. I hateful, brown can be anything from sand (the color of the purigen in my tank) to chocolate. or darker.
Some people say "Every vi months" but I'thousand sure that'south overly optimistic in a full stocked large tank like mine.
Some people say "every 3 months" which seems more realistic only almost people say "When it turns brown`" independent of any time frame just what colour brownish? Does the whole affair accept to be chocolate brown? I've seen pics of purigen that are coffee chocolate-brown - is that when you lot change information technology? Should I change information technology at present when it's tea colored/sand colored dark-brown?
If in that location are some white flecks, should I notwithstanding change it? I bought a bunch of bags on sale and so I could only switch it out just I don't desire to do so prematurely. Could someone give me an thought of what "when information technology's brownish ways? or amend yet post a film of withal working purigen that is tan and not working purigen that is dark chocolate-brown?
Thanks in advance!

My tank h2o stops looking polished when my PurIgen bags turn milk chocolate dark-brown. That's is when they get replaced. So far I have not tried to recharge them. I do large water changes every 5 days, they last vi-viii months.

Hey guys,

Thank you so much, peculiarly to Bluesszz who just saved me money. I was going to trade mine out and it's non even brown I realize. Mine is sandy camel with some white flecks still, sort of like a camel heather, so I volition exit it in until information technology's darker and uniformly chocolate-brown.
By comparison, mine isn't fifty-fifty brown yet, it'southward off white and however I wasn't sure I wasn't supposed to change it now since it has turner browner than it was.
I accept 1 bag each on two 46 gallon bowfront aquariums (both of them are overfiltered with 2 filters only I simply have purigen in 1 of the filters) merely both of them are defintiely stocked to capacity one with livebearers and fry and 3 dwarf plecos and one with corys/kuhlis/dearest gouramis. I realize ymmv just what would you judge would exist the lifetime out of it. I exercise weekly 30 per cent water changes but probably overfeed. 6 months?I already noticed the 1 with the three dwarf plecos is more camel colored than the other. Should I just check them when I rinse out the filter and when they are chocolate, throw them out?
The reason I don't want to recharge isn't because I'm paranoid abou the bleach like some people, information technology simply seems similar more than $five worth of work (not to mention the cost of prime/bleach).

I understand the concern about bleach simply never had a problem doing it and it worrks swell. Why throw away a $x product when it only takes a cup full of bleach and a couple cap fills of prime number. We are talking penny's worth of bleach and prime. It is pretty straight frontwards get a small bowl half h2o half bleach let it soak for 24 hours. Rinse put it in New water with prime. I do the 2nd footstep twice just to be sure merely withal it is an easy and safe affair to do.

Like the poster higher up said if you are not recharging it I will gladly take your old ones.

I don't bleach mine either. Personal preference. I run the Purigen until it gets almost as dark-brown as coffee grounds ... the "chocolate look" described to a higher place. [My water is uber crystal clear and polished (I also apply 100 & 50 micron polishing pads)].

I have two tanks and four HOB filters.. On my heavily stocked 38 gallon I run three filters. I have three 100ml bags of Purigen and I "stagger" changes. I alter one out almost every 4 months and then each one gets changed well-nigh once a year..

In my 29 gallon, I run a Fluval C4 HOB and run 2 bags of Purigen. I stagger the change interval in that tank also detect I need to put in a fresh i in about every six months .... so I change each 1 annually.

The use of "cutting to fit" micron polishing pads & Purigen bought on line fo half the price of purchasing it at Petland makes my water so crystal clear & polshied that my aquariums are a real "conversation slice."

If it costs me an extra $25 or so a year for great results, so be it. No manner am I going to fiddle with either the stench or or time and effort information technology takes to utilize the bleach method. Also, I don't wnat to risk harming the fish if I don't leave all the chlorine. .
